Now comes the city of Detroit by way of an emergency manager appointed by the governor with plans to use the US Bankruptcy court to confiscate city of Detroit retirees' pensions.  The scheme is to blindside retirees by giving them little or no chance to contest the looting of their pensions.  Pensioners were "not contacted" prior to the city of Detroit file for chapter 9 bankruptcy.  After the bankruptcy was filed, the city sent each pensioner a letter giving them from Thursday evening to the court closed the following Monday to obtain a lawyer then file an objection to the bankruptcy filing.  This was the city of Detroit good faith bargaining method with pensioners. Most pensioners not understanding the letter, not having an attorney, and not being able to retain an attorney did not know how to respond.

Imagine your bank, credit union, job, or stock broker after mismanagement sent you a letter that arrived Thursday evening stating that they were in bankruptcy.  The letter further states that you must take the proper actions that include advice from an attorney to protect your money from be forfeited.  If a written objection from you was not received before the close of the following Monday you are excluded from submitting future objections or taking further actions to protect your money.  When you ask why were you not contacted during bargaining they say there were too many others to bargain with.  Would you feel that you were being treated fairly?
